Since 1985, VTIFF has provided a forum for films dealing with issues of war and peace, justice and human rights, and the environment. In a cultural context in which industrial commercial filmmaking dominates, the Vermont International Film Festival plays a vital cultural role to bringing non-commercial forms of cinematic expression to the public attention.

Most years, VTIFF accepts independent films from around the world in any length and genres that fit into one of the three categories: Justice and Human Rights, War and Peace, or the Environment. Awards for Best Film, Short and Long are given in each of the three subject categories. Selected films in the Environmental Category will compete for Ben & Jerry's cash award. Selected films in all categories will also compete for the Heart of the Festival Award.
