Since 1985, VTIFF has provided a forum for films dealing with issues of war and peace, justice and human rights, and the environment. In a cultural context in which industrial commercial filmmaking dominates, the Vermont International Film Festival plays a vital cultural role to bringing non-commercial forms of cinematic expression to the public attention.<br /><br />Most years, VTIFF accepts independent films from around the world in any length and genres that fit into one of the three categories: <span style="font-weight:bold;">Justice and Human Rights, War and Peace</span>, or the <span style="font-weight:bold;">Environment</span>. Awards for Best Film, Short and Long are given in each of the three subject categories. Selected films in the Environmental Category will compete for<span style="font-weight:bold;"> Ben & Jerry's</span> cash award.
